the tinies - it's ok to be small

The tinies

6" x 6"

I painted this several months ago and promised to tell the story about it.

It’s simple really, and this is it: Right now it feels like bigger is better. That if you aren’t doing something BIG all the time you aren’t doing something vaulable, that you aren’t valuable? you can feel like you don’t count. Maybe I’m projecting? So I’ll just own it myself and say this is how I feel sometimes.

It seems that first, you have to have BIG dreams, and then you have to tell everyone about them. Then you also have to SHOUT to be heard, and then if you get a bunch of people listening to you - the more followers and friends you have the more we respect you, the more we listen to you? the more we think you know what you’re doing? the MORE you have going on, the busier you are = the MORE important you are. Any of this sound right to you reading this? or is it just me?

It’s similar to how I felt as a kid, that I couldn’t wait to be a grown up because then I would be important, and then I would be heard.

Life on these terms, is exhausting. And it’s not that going for something BIG isn’t worth doing or something we should reach for {if we feel like it’s what we want to do? and not everbody does} but it shouldn’t be the only way people can get attention or receive the respect and value they deserve.

I feel as if doing something small and quiet is underrated and overlooked right now.

That if we’re not always doing something BIG {and talking about it} we will be forgotten, lost in the shuffle, that our contribution as people will lose relevance.

It might seem strange to write this post after I just ran this Kickstarter campaign - because all of this was a BIG/HUGE leap for me and I had to be in people’s space way more than I’ve ever been - and now I’m creating something entirely new, where all the same risks apply - but this experience has made it even clearer - as to why this sentiment is especially important right now.

These characters, "the tinies" are about acknowledging the small. Because actually - the BIG moments in life are made up entirely from a collection of small moments. It’s those small individual moments, that move us; and I don’t want to miss those, not in my life and not in other’s lives.

I also want to remember that it’s ok to be quiet. It’s ok to just be. It’s ok to not want to do something BIG all the time.

It’s ok to be small.

{I’ve decided to keep this original, but as of today "the tinies" are available as a print in the shop}

Love this!!! You are awesome in my book!! Let me know if you ever want to sell this one!!! Just saying.........
Love this, it resonates so deeply! All I want to do is...well, nothing. I mean, I want to be creative and do art and sew and garden and such. But I'm not feeling inclined to go BIG right now. (She says as she is about to release another book, ha!)
Beautifully written Marisa and you are not alone. Here is to the tinies! :)
This is so lovely to hear! Thanks for being big AND brave for taking about the little and sometimes quiet.
I needed that. It's been a rough week, professionally, for me. That, of course, gets me thinking too much. And I always think about MORE, how to regroup stronger, bigger, better. But this time I've been asking myself if that's the right response for right now.
I hope this week is better Cheryl and that you are getting the clarity you need. I know its not easy sometimes. The what I am now realizing are - normal challenges - that come with doing this kind of work, can really push us out of our comfort zone.
thankyou for this Marisa, I asked the universe for some help on this subject today and you popped into my mind ( I took your creative business course a few years ago!)...and here I am and here is a big wake up call! Stop worrying, get quiet, listen within and create the little beautiful things my heart truly wants to make, get things back to simple in my life ... and stop thinking so far into the future and about what others want! Being a thriving artist is being a happy and balanced soul too!
