documentaries :: a few new favorites

Cutie and the boxer

Do you know this about me? I’m obsessed with stories about creatives and entrepreneurs.

This means documentaries and I get along well.

Honestly, on the days when I doubt the life I’ve chosen {they still happen although less often than they used to} and I think about if I still want to keep going with this art buisness or simply on days when I feel misunderstood, there’s nothing better than sitting down with Sean, a bowl of popcorn, my favorite white fuzzy blanket and watching a documentary like these.

I keep telling friends about all the new ones I’ve come across lately so I thought I’d put together a list of a few of them here, to share with you and also make an easy link I can just email. Most, if not all, of these you can 'watch instantly' on Netflix. I’ve linked each to their trailers.

Cutie and the Boxer

20 Feet from Stardom

Searching for Sugarman

the Punk Singer

Somm

L’Amour Fou

Beauty is Embarrassing one of my all time favorites, I’ve posted it before but it needs posting again incase you missed it the first time .

Did I miss some? What are some of your favorites?

Although I've never heard of any of the films on your list, I find your post reassuring! I have fantasies about retreating from society and actually living in my own little world (instead of just in my head!). My favourite recent find is this: http://vimeo.com/14938491 (BYUN this must be the place).
I absolutely love Anvil! The Story of Anvil, the story of a heavy metal band who inspired all the other successful bands we still know today, but never got successful itself. I remember seeing it for the first time in Paris a tiny theater near Beaubourg, and everybody applauded at the end (not something that happens so often).

You don't have to be a heavy metal fan (I'm not), it's just a deeply human story, and one that makes you wonder: when is it time to give up on your dream? This is a documentary that made me laugh, root for the guys in it, hope with them and cry at the end. So, yes, I highly recommend this one. :)

Veronique!! hellooo! can't wait to watch this with Sean
A few I've watched more than once...Our City Dreams and Bill Cunningham New York (both on Netflix instant) and Beautiful Losers. Thanks for the list, there's a few new to me titles there!
I love the documentary about Milton Glaser. Thank you for your list!
hey marisa, gotta share my connections to the Punk Singer: kathleen played on my partner's soccer team for a couple seasons, and the cinematographer on the film is a good friend of mine (moira morel). olympia has the coolest people!
seriously Wendy? what a small world!
and olympia seems to be a vortex that sucks in people, then they spread out all over the world, and those people find each other, and then they figure out they have people in common, from oly. we're all connected. :-)
