the duckling and the umbrella

The duckling and the umbrella
8 x 8 in.

Ever wonder how painting ideas come to me?

Ok. So last Monday on the 4th of July we are sitting in a park in Brighton, NY with my dear friend Kimm and her family watching the fireworks. Following each firework, a little puff of smoke remained and it would trail off to the left until there was a row of little puffs. You know how clouds often take on a familiar shapes? Well, one of those puffs, for a moment, looked just like a duck holding an umbrella. That’s that. Painting idea born. #inspirationiseverywhere

Does a duckling ever need an umbrella? Maybe he just wants one for a fashion statement?

You were right around the corner from my hometown, no fair! :)

Glad you had a fun trip. And love your new inspiration. He's very cute.
EVERYONE needs an umbrella that like! How fun ... my girl and I just completed a mixed media piece (inspired by Sarah Ahearn's new book) and it is all about ducks! Must be the season of the duck ...

welcome home :)

What a cute little thing! I love the patchwork umbrella!!!
Marisa, This painting is adorable. I love your story that inspired you to paint it.
Inspiration comes from crazy places. Your work is adorable.
When I was little, I made my Grandma read "Splish, Splash and Splush" over and over. In the story, the ducklings don't want to get wet, so one wears gumboots, another a raincoat and the third has an umbrella! They do learn to swim in the end, once their accessories float away. I'm so happy your picture reminded me of that!
I was in manhattan for the show too, looking on from my friend's apartment window. I knew I felt a little warm fuzzy seeing all the many people gathered!
