here we go

Here we go
12 x 9 in.

There are times in life, when doors open. And there are times when you walk through them. They do not always happen simultaneously.

You could say that life has been opening a lot of wonderful doors for me lately. You could also say that maybe I’ve been knocking long and hard enough on those doors that it was about damn time they open! ;) Or maybe you could say that they have opened before, but I wasn’t ready to walk through them until now.

You see, I’m beginning to realize that doors of opportunity open often~ but you have to know how to recognize an open door when you see one, and you also have to be ready to walk through. That’s the part that I’ve been so frustrated about before in life, the part when I felt like I was ready, in fact I was absolutely certain I was ready but in hindsight I could see that I actually wasn’t ready yet. Am I making sense here or am I just typing the word 'ready' a lot?

This painting was actually inspired and painted back in November, immediately following my time at Quilt Market. It was a pivotal time because I had the fabric line in clear view, I was invited to speak at Alt and I have some other projects in the works that I haven’t even been able to share yet that also came together during this time. It was like something shifted.  And this image has become a symbol of that. On a totally random note, I also realized that I had never painted the backs of my characters before. It’s funny to me that you can still recognize them this way.

The little red rabbit, though....he’s looking back. He’s looking back because he wants everyone to come along with them. He wants everyone to go on the adventure, to succeed and thrive and have fun together. He’s making sure you know you are welcome to come too.

But the thing is, not everyone will come along for the journey at the same time or sadly at all. And this is a bummer really, especially when those people are your close friends or family, the ones that you want to come with you the most. Then you remember that the only time anyone can go through an open door of opportunity is when they are truly ready, and not before. It’s important to acknowledge this, but don’t let it keep you from going forward ~ because that really doesn’t help anyone. People want to be inspired. We are inspired when we see people, what is that saying?, "go confidently in the direction of their dreams" and I will add "walk through those open doors".

Are you ready?

A new favorite, I’ve been holding on to the original of this painting until today. I’m finally 'ready' to let it go to it’s new home. *there I had to type "ready" one final time, for good measure ~ you know.*

{ original is sold ~ also available as a print here and here (because it looks really good in a large size)}

What an incredible painting, sentiment aside. It may be a new favourite for me.
Good for you for forging ahead!
good for you too Cheryl! thank you!
I love this-the painting and the message! And so true...
I ran across the term "lurker" on your blog today and realized, to my shame, that I have been one. So I'm popping in to say "thank you" for making me go through the door of comment making. Your posts are not only encouraging but inspirational and your art is delightful!
Great post, and I love it even more since we already own this print!!
Marisa: I have been eying this in your shop since you posted it in december....it is really fitting for me today...I'll send you a note and explain why..thanks for sharing it with the world
Oh my dear, I love the backs of these little guys, ready for their new journeys with each other to guide the way. What a lovely sense of community they have as they delve into something new! And that look back, as if to say, are you coming too? I am!!!! See you there!
"you have to learn how to recognize an open door when you see one...."
my heart said 'yes!".....this is so very true!

what a wise and thoughtful post Marisa....its true, not everyone will come on the journey, so it can be bittersweet...but then again, who knows what adventures await?!
and you sound
so
ready! :)
What a beautiful painting! I love how the little red rabbit is looking back and the story behind it. It is so true that people can't walk through the door of opportunity until they are truly ready. Thank you for that reminder.
Marisa,

beautiful painting... but i love your writing even more. it was great meeting you at quilt market and see you soak in the quilting world like a sponge... since market it's been really nice to see you grow and have great doors open that you are ready for.

all the best

This painting really speaks to me. I've been reading a book about transitions in life and this reminds me of that in-between place where it is hard to acknowledge the ending that is necessary to move forward into the new, beginning place. Anyway, I'm going to your shop to check out the prints.
Hi Marisa -
I think you've artfully articulated what many of us often ignore, that is, to go through a door and on to new adventures often means leaving something behind. That transition time/space is difficult, yet I believe that spending some time there, looking back and recognizing that you have something worthwhile and valued behind you means that you will then be able to turn and focus forward. I think where we get ourselves into the most trouble is when are leaving something we like for something we don't know yet.

I like the painting, however it's your writing here that I most identify with. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, too!
This is so touching. I know the feeling of being "ready" to let go of something. it can feel wonderful and also sad in some ways.
I just need to say thank you my friend for these words. That us all I have time for now...just wanted to let you know they really touched my heart. More later. Happy day!
thank YOU for de-lurking and saying hello! And just so you know, lurking is always welcome too!
