what's inspiring me now ~ Oliver Jeffers

A few years ago, I bought a children’s book for Sean’s niece, Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. It quickly became one of her favorite books and seriously, how could it not? Not only are the illustrations so beautiful and endearing but the story is equally as sweet. I thought Oliver had been creating these books forever, but as it turns out his first one only came out in 2004.

This morning we purchased our second Oliver Jeffers book to give to Sean’s nephew and, as I’m sure you know how it goes...it got me surfing the internet for all things Oliver. What a truly wonderful artist, from spirit to talent to range of creative style. Turns out we share an appreciation for negative space, hand lettering, honesty and the belief that there is a lot *shite* in the picture book world.

I’m completely inspired. And it also got me thinking, I think it’s time for my characters to start telling their stories...

If you quickly become obsessed, as I did, and want to see even more Oliver you can see additional videos of him speaking  here and here {very thoughtful and involved presentation all about how he got started, his process, and how his work has evolved}.

Happy Sunday!

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'm officially crushing.
We love his books too! I pretty much pick Sam's books out from the library by the illustrations. But the stories are really great in his books too. And yes, there is a lot of shite in the children's books. Don't know how some of them get published. xoxo
He's awesome! What a character. What is it about the Irish? They're all so funny and colourful. I'm not exaggerating--I spent a couple of weeks travelling around Ireland 10 years ago and everyone I met was lovely and hilarious and utterly original. Must be something in the... Guiness?
Definitely in the Guiness ;) and I totally agree as I share my life with a 2nd generation Irish man. I even have a little Irish/Scottish in me as well {my maiden name is Cummings} and have always been longing to go to Ireland for a visit. I think it is also TIME for that visit!
wow! This is inspiring. I really like his process! I too enter the blank page through loose concepts + ideas sketched out on pages and pages of - whatever blank page is available. I also resonate with him when he said he writes because its in him - oh yeah. guess all artists do - though i sometimes create because i need it in me. thanks for sharing.
thank you for sharing this. we are unfamiliar with this author but can't wait to find his books. we have 2 library clubs on tuesday...i'll be looking then. be well.
I just bought that as our second Oliver Jeffers book too. Just last week. My girls love it. We discovered him randomly a the library. My girls have a knack for picking our beautiful books as they walk the shelves just grabbing!

Love him too... BUT your guy's stories, yes please! Just who is Olive anyway?
My husband has bought me an Oliver Jeffers book every Christmas for the past few years. His illustrations are wonderful. Hoping for The Heart And The Bottle this year. x
Your character's stories, please. I love Miles and I also want to hear the tales the French Friends have to tell!

Have you seen the animation film of Lost and Found?
I love Oliver Jeffers stories and illustrations, they capture the innocence and imaginations of every child (and child within them!)
As an illustrator myself, I do think that the film has kept those qualities. (it made me cry!)
ooh the French friends! I do wonder what story they have to tell...!
oooh la la la la!
In my obsessive Oliver Jeffers internet searches I did come across the preview for it, but have not seen the whole story. It looks wonderful. The music alone brought tears to my eyes.
