baby giraffe and the baby octopus

Baby giraffe & baby octopus square crop

One of the best parts of painting commissions is when a client suggests an idea that you hadn’t thought of yet.

I mean, who would’ve thought that a baby giraffe and a baby octopus could be friends? As it turns out they are.

And this painting also has a story. Would you like me to tell you? Oh, ok I will.

I live in a lovely, peaceful neighborhood, on a very quiet street in Los Angeles. Very often when I print my postage from home, I also leave my ready to ship package outside on my front stoop for the mailman to pick up. I think it may have been one of those weeks, you know the kind, the one where things just don’t go quite as easily as you’d hoped... because I opened my front door to check on if my package had been picked up, only to find that yes indeed it had, but not by the mailman.  An empty, torn open priority mail box was carefully set on my stoop.  Yup, someone had stolen my newly finished commission painting.

You can only imagine how heartbreaking that was. I mean it’s bad enough when something is stolen from you, but something that you hand made especially for someone else. To add insult to injury the client I was making this painting for was actually giving it as a gift to her boyfriend.  So, so disheartening. And honestly, I’m sure the person who went through the trouble of stealing it was probably disappointed too. I mean, hey they got a painting. What are they going to do with that? Which is precisely what I wonder. I never found the painting. What I think happened is that someone grabbed it off the stoop, carried it around the corner, ripped open the box and discarded it, the box that is. Someone else must have found the empty box and kindly returned it to me.

Where did this painting end up?

I was pretty upset for a while and then I had to find a way to feel better about it all. First, my very understanding client allowed me to create another piece for her. So, I decided that maybe, just maybe this painting brightened someone’s day. I mean if someone was so down on their luck that they had to steal a priority shipping box off of someone’s stoop, they probably could use some cheering up, (along with a sever reprimanding about how wrong it is to steal) Maybe the person who stole it kept it, or if they tossed it aside maybe someone else found it and it brightened their day. I sincerely hope what I hope for all of my paintings, that they find their way to someone’s home and add a little joy to their lives.

Hope it brings a smile to you today too, because they’re so cute aren’t they? And the octopus clearly loves the giraffe.

i'm sure it will put a smile on someone's face. i am the beach enjoying some time with my family, so it put a smile on mine for sure. it is an uncommon situation, but those are the best.
Oh boy, I'm so sorry that happened! A handful of packages (of toys) got stolen from my car two years ago and I felt the same way. Bummed about it but also hoping they wound up in good hands somehow.
Oh how upsetting!! Here's my story for where your painting might have ended up... I hope these happy endings take the sting out of your sad story a bit. I imagine the original thief tossed it away somewhere down the street. Perhaps some hipster, into picking up found objects, has taken it home, and loves their painting found on the street. Or maybe someone homeless came across it, and wondered how someone could throw this away, and took it to make their life a little more beautiful. Or perhaps, it landed in some bushes, where it has created a little shelter, for some small critter, a home for tiny creatures like the one you paint.
How awful! I've never had that happen but I can only imagine the hurt and anger. I truly believe that it did brighten someone's day, though not necessarily the person who stole it.
Heartbreaking, indeed, but you have a great attitude. I bet the stolen painting is brightening someone's day. But not the thief's because they might like it so much they'll be watching for more packages!

I SO appreciate your optimism and ability to turn something so terrible into something positive. Sending cheery smiles your way...
My favourite yet.

I think maybe it made them a good person. and we all lived happily ever after...

well you never know!
I can't believe someone would steal a package! That's awful!!!

This painting is so lovely, I really like the baby giraffe!
oh my gosh! That is crazy and horrible! My heart jumped as I was reading!!! I hate it when people steal--and stealing an original handmade painting is even worse! I really love your positive slant on it though, and this painting is gorgeous!
I once had two of my handmade fused and slumped glass bowls in my car. I was taking them to a customer so she could choose which one she preferred. Sadly, I was in a bad car accident that day and had to go to the hospital. The car was totaled and towed to the police impound lot. By the time I got there, days later. The bowls were both gone. I imagine some burly tow truck driver has a very nice receptacle for his daily cigar. HA!
Oh Linda! After all of that. I'm sorry. I see you found your sense of humor about it thought, because your last line really made me laugh :)
I love this piece and really wish that it was available on your etsy page! I bought a few of your small prints at the last renegade craft fare in SF. Do you happen to have a print of this for sale?
Hi Jessa! If you really have your heart set on this image. Id be happy to make a print for you ;) I may have even had it listed in my Etsy shop briefly. Just let me know!
