It never occurred to me that they weren't going to sell ~ Sandra Boynton

Watch CBS News Videos Online

I tweeted this a couple of weeks ago from Paris. In case you missed it, I thought I would also post it here and explain to you why this particular video means so much to me.

You see, not only is Sandra’s story of her life as an artist incredibly inspiring, but Boynton illustrations were my all time favorite when I was growing up. I absolutely loved her art. I collected it all from cards, to books, to magnets to wrapping paper, even a stuffed animal. You name it, if it Sandra Boynton illustrated it, I had it.

I had almost forgotten that Sandra’s work was an early influence, just like I almost forgot that becoming an artist was what I was meant to do.

It’s always been there, it just always has. It just took a little longer to realize than I thought, but I am here now.

I am here.

When I saw this recent interview with Sandra, I understood. I finally understood why I was drawn to the straightforward, genuine honesty and humor that exists in her adorable characters. And I also had, what do you call it? a lightbulb moment? an aha moment? of realizing that being a fan of her art was, maybe one of the very first seeds planted that has now grown into my own group of characters, that I love just the same.

Best parts of this interview "It never occurred to me that they weren’t going to sell" ~ to my artists out there: what if? what if?! you thought this way?

I also can’t believe, and am completely inspired by the fact that she built and runs this entire art empire by herself.

"I guess ideally, that I would like to add to people’s sense that there is good in the world" ~ Sandra Boynton

one of the very same reasons I create the art that I do.

Thanks for sharing...I have seen/heard but didn't know the name...amazing story and so inspiring. Talk about full confidence, right? I love that! :)
Oh sweet marisa, thank you so much for sharing this! It's such an amazing story and so inpiring! Loving that quote! Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you!
I always ENJOY reading her books to my kids! They are so whimsical and engaging, even for adults! Loved seeing the interview, Thanks!
Thank you Marisa for sharing this story and the video. Its really inspiring!
Thanks for sharing this, I loved Boyton as a kid and as a mom reading her books to my kids. What a great story!
Thanks for sharing this- I can't believe how many card designs I recognised! What an inspiring lady!
Thanks Marisa and welcome back! I loved that her husband did not "get" her most money making card idea. Because so many times as artists, our family and friends don't quit "get" what we're doing or where we're going, and we need to trust ourselves and trust that what we are doing and where we are going is right for us.
A lover of Boynton as well. The books especially, my kids can't give them away even though they are older and don't read them anymore. What a great inspiration.
What an inspiration to just run with what you create, not thinking perhaps others won't "get" you. Love it.
Thanks so much for sharing this Marisa, she was one of my early influences as well (although I didn't know it) I was so excited that I got to take my Boyton cat out of its storage box and give it to my daughter this year. I love seeing it in her play, and she loves Sandra's books. Such an important artist! Than you for always reminding us through your work and what you share here that our art is important!
Love it!I loved the books, my mom bought all the cards, and yes, my dad owns Pigorian Chant. Ha!
absolutely Kristy!
wow. wow. wow. that is amazing!!!!!! There cannot be too many exclamation points! And I love the fact that she runs it all herself. And I love the fact that she said she is ridiculously in touch with her childhood. Oh, what inspiration! Thank you for sharing!
Sitting here with a heart so full right now, Marisa. SUCH an inspiring segment! One more thing in the arsenal. You are heaven sent, m'dear... a beacon and a guide yourself. Thanks SOOOO much for posting this!
Wonderful interview!! My heart is bursting! I love that she wants to give a sense of good in the world, what a wonderful sentiment and such an inspiration. I also loved her work growing up, I remember in 4th grade that some of her stickers were the prized ones in my sticker collection :)
I can definitely see the influence in your work, there is a similar sense of the joy, tenderness and innocence that you share.
xo
Thanks for sharing this interview. I may be showing my age, but when in college, my husband and I gave each other almost every one of her "love" cards. In fact we kept them. My children grew up to "The Barnyard Dance" and so many of her books that I can on and on about how fun they are to read. This was fun looking back.... :)
thank you Faith ~ that's a great compliment, to see similar qualities in my work. I know I had the stickers in my sticker collection too :)
oh you're welcome Uncle Beefy! thank YOU! :)
Oh, wow. What a great interview + post. I am happy I stumbled upon this! Thanks for sharing!
Oh, I love this interview. Thanks for posting it again, as I missed the tweet. I like her style and yours too.
Wow, memories. I didn't realize it was Boynton that did the Hippo Birdie Two Ewe. Her artwork has been prevalent in my path to being an artist as well. Thank you for sharing this. Such a positive and inspiring vibes! -May
okay. this is the second time I've read one of your posts and was moved by an over whelming force that stretched my heart so much my eyes leaked - a bit. no kidding.

When I read, " I almost forgot that becoming an artist was what I was meant to do." yep. that's what did it.
it touched me into silence.
If you know me, you'd know that's a big deal cuz I'm chatty.
I recently wrote a post where I said, "if we could track all the good we've done through the seemingly little things- we'd have the strength to actualize our dreams." This little post has that big huge power.
thank you for sharing your heart in this post. talk about an act of creation. I see it as creative living at it's finest!
Wow, what a terrific and fun interview. I remember Boynton's work from my own youth as well...Wow. Thanks for sharing this. I love that she wants to help show people that there is good in the world, and that her art is sweet, good-natured, and fun. It is hard to be that sort of artist today, it seems.

Again, thanks for sharing the interview.
Thank you Marisa for posting this interview! Amazing! I sent it to my daughter in law. She is is 26 and she just end a story book with lovely ilustrations. I know she will be inspired ans moved as I was. She is looking forward to follow her passion and keep hearing her inner voice. She is very talented and I know she will do good to people with her story books.

This is an awesome video! I love how she met her sweetie -- that is amazing. And wow on believing in yourself and the good in the world. Just wow! I believe in the good in others -- but believing in myself is so much harder. HUGS! :)
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing Marissa! I remember Sandra Boynton!
I bought her cards. She inspired me to make my own.
I've been a lot slower in coming around to starting a business.....
