I am a Thriving Artist

Book cover painting 4 etsy

I have a mission:

going all the way back to why I began podcasting, including this early podcast and post  ~this mission inspires my life, my teaching and my art. I want to change the concept of starving artist to thriving artist. It’s time don’t you think?

I thought so, and then I recently came across an entire line, brand new to the market of "starving artist" design, from coffee cups to bags,  selling in art supplies stores across the country. With all due respect to the artist who created the image, her designs are adorable ~ but the concept ~  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Let me rant for a second. Please skip to the next paragraph to ignore my rant. {I know! how about, let’s make a "Starving Lawyer" coffee cup, and the lawyer can be holding a little brief case overflowing with papers. I’m sure that will be a great seller. And then let’s make a "Starving Teacher" cup?  ~ and a "Starving Fireman" cup and a "Starving Bank Executive" cup. Good LORD ~ is this really the message we want to be putting out into the world, especially following the year we had last year? It’s hard enough to keep your optimism up about abundance without drinking your coffee from a cup that says "starving" on it. O.K. I’m done.}

When I get this frustrated, here’s what I do: I take what frustrates me and then I let what I want instead, inspire my life going forward. And in this case it is also inspiring my creations going forward.

If someone out there actually thinks that creating a "starving artist" line of products is a good idea ~ then creating a line of thriving artists product might well be a good idea too ~ so I’ve decided to create my own line, the THRIVING ARTIST line by Creative Thursday.

Introducing the first product in the line, a new print of an original illustration featured above. What’s interesting is that this image is also a brand new style of creating for me. Using a yellow vintage book cover as my canvas, I illustrated  with pencil, black ink and acrylic paints. I have to say, I really loved creating this piece, everything from the "newness" of painting on a book cover, to re-reading the sentiment while I was working on it. For my e-course students, I know you’ll understand, I lost all track of time in the creating of this piece.

Speaking of my students ~ past, present and future this image is dedicated to all of you.

Every time I teach, online or in person ~ I’m inspired to be to better, to live better.  I’m inspired to emphasize this message of "thriving" for everyone, regardless of your chosen profession.

I will close by saying that I for one chose a career as an artist expecting to THRIVE.

This image is also dedicated to all of the artists out there who know this, believe it, and live it, and on the days where you aren’t feeling it, you are reminded to reach for it again.

have a great weekend! xoxo

{the original is not for sale, but you can purchase it as a print over in the shop}

I love it!
oh, my GOSH! i totally agree. i'm so tired of people joking about my being a starving artist (i quit a miserable job some months ago to focus on art and to figure out what to do next--something that would be a GOOD fit for me). they think it's so funny to joke about it, and i do not (maybe because it currently hits a little too close to home?), and because i choose to define 'thriving' differently than just by looking at my bank account. so that's my rant, i guess. now i'll go turn that into something positive :)
Yes!! Great message!
Aw, very sweet dedication and print! I'm looking forward to thriving :)
marisa, i love this post & your mission!! how many artists are torpedoing their own success by embracing the "starving artist" image? too many.

i shared your mission over at scoutie girl with my own thoughts: <a href="http://www.scoutiegirl.com/2010/03/creative-thursday-i-am-a-thriving-artist.html">http://www.scoutiegirl.com/2010/03/creative-thursday-i-am-a-thriving-artist.html</a> (can you tell i was excited??)

thanks! this post was a fabulous way to start my weekend!
this is awesome!
As a current student in the fishbowl, THANK YOU!
excellent post! i love the way you took something negative and made something so much stronger by being positive. that's definitely something i need to learn from!
plus, what a beautiful illustration.
it reminds me of how irritated i got in college when asked "oh, do you want fries with that" in response to telling people i was a history major. the denigration of arts, literature and humanities in our society is an issue very dear to me (don't worry, i won't get started on it here!). and maybe we need "starving teacher" merch just to point out the absurdity of devaluing the people who hold our future in their hands?
Yay for thriving artists! And I'm very excited about your new line, can't wait to see more. I would totally drink out of a thriving artist cup. Starving? Not my thing. I hate the stereotype that we must suffer for our art. It just isn't like that anymore.
thrive -we shall! i will paint my own and put it in my studio to remind me of my path.
Absolutely perfect. Brava!
I LOVED the rant! By the way you share your passionate rant you show how much you care and that gives us the energy we need to empower ourselves to search the path we would most like to walk. Thank you..
I am moved by the expectations and standards you have set for your profession. For your life, for that matter.

I come pop a squat on your blog every now and again and leave always grounded, uplifted, and reassured that my life as a designer and creator in this world is worth just exactly what I chose it to be.

I have high list of expectations for my designing and there is no reason whatsoever I shouldn't add the adjective "thriving" to this list.

What I do matters to me. It fills my souls. And it matters to my clients too.

Otherwise, I wouldn't have clients now would I?

Thank you for your words and the sunny yellow in that print.

.mac :)
Don't mind the rant at all; it is healthy to express your opinion.

I love that you can find the positive lurking everywhere. Keep it going.

Sunshine and happiness.
It's not Paper Source's line, it's jane jenni. I'm a big fan of her illustrative style, and in her defense she has tons of illustrated sayings made into buttons, bags and totes. i'm sure it wasn't meant to hurt anyone's feelings. i completely understand where you're coming from though... I'm an artist too! my original thought when i first saw it was that it was a cute illustration, and i didn't stop to really think about the saying all that much. I do however agree with you... we should be thought of as "thriving artists" not starving.
Fabulous sentiments from a thriving woman -- thank you!
Hi Marisa

I couldn't agree more. That phrase has always given me stomach pangs. It also reminded me of this very sweet video I recently saw, called "Art, I want you" - a wonderful little song with an animated video all about why we make art. It makes my heart swell each time I watch it and I thought you and your readers would like it too. It is kind of the perfect anthem of a THRIVING ARTIST I posted it to my blog and you can see it there:

<a href="http://pixelandpost.blogspot.com/2010/03/art-i-want-you.html">http://pixelandpost.blogspot.com/2010/03/art-i-want-you.html</a>

Sincerely
Julia (Fall 09 Fishbowl-er!)
{{{{SHAKING FIST IN AIR}}}}}} Aye Aye!

I agree with you and love the new direction, lets all THRIVE and be done with the notion that we have to suffer to be considered a creative, an artist.
nicely said marisa :)
couldn't agree more!
thank you Dana~ you should spend some time with me in person and youll definitely hear my rants. :) This is a tame condensed version I shared here on the blog. As I often say, I get fired up!!!!
Oh no Cheryl! Thanks for bringing this up. I dont want my post to be misunderstood ~ that's why I put my disclaimer "all due respect to the artist" in my post, because I do know that it's Jane's work, and she does have a very fun illustrative style ~ so I want to be clear that my post is not about Jane's drawing or design. It is about the concept. And I'm sure the concept is meant to be humorous and light, but it's not to me at all. The fact that people can consider joking about it, tells me that it still hasn't hit home that all creative work should be valued, all people and all careers for that matter.
I just made your artwork my desktop art! Thanks. I came here a few months ago and read a post that looked like you weren't going to be blogging much. I'm glad you are still at it. Now I have a nice built in mantra.
i still remember when i found your podcast. it offered a new perspective that was honest and encouraging. it's true that we have to believe it ourselves and we certainly need reminders like this for those "moments"
wow! what an amazing post! thank you so much for putting things in the proper perspective. words are powerful. if we can't say it, we can't have it. bravo!
Dearest sweet Marisa, i feel really inspire by you and the messages you always pass on to other creative soul like me/us/world. :) So nicely said and i couldn't agree more. Thank you so much for dedicating this lovely illustration to all of us your little fishes. :) *hugz tight*

I saw this in your lovely shop yesterday and i love it so much! Wanted to ask about the original but i found the answer here today. hehe Have a lovely merry happy weekend and lots of love to you sweet sweet Marisa and sean!
I love, love, love this picture! I could not agree more, No more starving artists! Thriving Artists Only!!! Thanks Marisa have a good weekend.
Marisa, I just LOVE this post, it was exactly what I needed to hear this morning...after getting a rejection yesterday. I am equally outraged about the whole Starving artist line, and beyond excited about your Thriving Artist line. What a great way of carrying that idea through! I was so in love with the Thriving Artist image that you made for the Together class and I'm hoping you'll sell a print of that!
By the way, I am really missing the class! Frank and I so enjoyed the weekly times that we'd sit and listen together and then talk. The discussions that the class sparked between us have been deep and long lasting, and are really leading us on a path of change and renewal...and that we were already on, but I guess that the class has given us more clarity. So much thanks to you and Sean for being such inspirations and for your willingness to share so much of yourselves! xoFaith
thank you. :) Your post lets me breath deeper.
Thank you, Marisa. I just ordered a print from your Etsy store and I am going to hang it above my desk as a constant reminder to myself to be grateful, be positive and THRIVE. Thank you for the inspiration today, I needed it.
I couldn't agree more.
Oh, I adore that video so much, Julia. thank you!
thanks Cheryl! I also made a little edit to my original post, just to be super clear about my appreciation of Jane's art vs. the concept.
"the denigration of arts, literature and humanities in our society"...don't get ME started! ~ which by the way you are always welcome to "get started" here in the comments Meghan :)
thank you so much Tara. I loved your post!
Well, i like fired up people. You could say i am a ranting person myself. I would love to do some seriuos ranting together, but...Los angeles and Amsterdam.....sadly it's too far away to do some good ranting over a cup of coffee.
I LOVE the video, it's so sweet and gentle....
You rock, Marisa! This is such a great idea!!!
Hey Marisa,

NEVER A WORD SPOKE SO TRUE! Great rant and a fine mission to have. I would love to do one of your e-courses so that I can push my jewellery business forward. Hope you have more dates soon.
Right, back to the studio! Thanks for the optimism and motivation.
Love it love it Marisa! What a great painting and a Thriving Artist is so perfect...I also like the rant... its real. I want to thank you for sharing your rant and your thoughts on a topic that hits deeply for me. How do we get such a crappy "tag"- where did it come from? you are so right why not a starving realtor or a starving pharmaceutical rep? ugh. I love how you take something that annoys you and turn it into something beautiful - thank you for the inspiration.

Oh and Julia - that video! are you kidding me with that - brilliant! I must share it on my blog as well - thank you so much for sharing it do you know who created it? Between Marisa's beautiful yellow painting and this video -I just lit up, ironically on a rainy day!
LOVE IT!!!!
Thanks for the inspiration!

Marissa, I am also an art teacher - both to children and adults. The woman whom I teach range in age from young mothers to senior citizens. For each and everyone of them the time spent painting renews, and refreshes them. We call my studio their sanctuary. Even though they, and I, may never become rich monetarily, we are more fulfilled through the sharing of our passion and our love for the subject. Therefore, not starving but thriving.
Thank you for your rant and for your passion!!!!
Thankyou Marisa!!! True Inspiration as I start painting for the day! I choose not to listen to the voices of the past, relatives and friends who are so negative about "the arts" as a profession! Besides they contradict themselves, if there was no one creating art, books, film, games, blogs, photography, theatre, sculpture, architecture... then where would they find their inspiration, entertainment, what would they stare at, put on their walls, smile at and enjoy in awe?????????
THRIVE ALWAYS! (p.s. I want a "thriving artist" tea/coffee cup too!)
awesome post! just what i needed to read!

thank you :)
Agreed. Need more optimism out there. I have spoken to more frustrated artist lately, myself included. We need to stick together and remember thriving is more about the creative soul than the paycheck.
absolutely Paige! but just so you know my definition of Thriving includes the fulfillment of the creative soul and the paycheck!!!
Thriving artist is much more empowering, so I say way to go!
I love how bright and happy your new piece is...and especially what it represents. That we can thrive as artists...not starve. I suppose folks out there will capitalize on anything that can make a buck, but I think it's great you are taking the frustration and turning into something positive. Now that is cool!
Bravo Marisa. Bravo!!
I have to admit, I cringed when I saw the mug too. (sigh) Your thriving artist design is adorable. I love that you responded to your frustration by creating a positive counterpoint!
I was linked from Scoutie Girl and... I can't even tell you how inspired I am. Thank you for that!
You & I are kindred spirits! This is my mission - I'm out to kill the starving artist myth by helping creatives with the business side of art. :) I want all artists, writers, musicians, and all creatives to pay their bills AND make their art.

And I launched Thrive Creative Coaching (thrivecreativecoaching.com) just for this reason. :)
So cool! Alexia!!
I love what you wrote: "When I get this frustrated, here's what I do: I take what frustrates me and then I let what I want instead, inspire my life going forward. And in this case it is also inspiring my creations going forward."

This also makes this poor little journalist who reads sad things about the newspaper industry dying (me!) hopeful: "I'm inspired to emphasize this message of "thriving" for everyone, regardless of your chosen profession."

Thank you, Marisa!

Also wanted to say this little fishie will attend your book-making class at the Squam spring session, and I CANNOT WAIT! :)
Yay! Laura!! It will be great to have you in class!!!!
Oh, I cannot begin to tell you how strongly your post hit home for me. I read it and realized that I have let other's perception of art not being a viable career or life path stand in the way of what my heart knows for far too long. I am gradually changing my fear that "to be an artist means you should really also have a fall-back option" into an desire to thrive...and your post just catapulted me into a position of EXPECTING to thrive. A million, trillion thanks!
Yay! Megan! Expecting to thrive!!!! I love that. Such a subtle shift that a big difference.
TOTALLY agree. and the video julia posted is one of my absolute favorites!
I was so inspired by this post. here's the result ---

thank you for this reminder. i really needed to hear that today. i am new to your blog and excited to check out this podcast as well as your upcoming paris class. thank you for living your dream and inspiring me to believe that it is possible again. best wishes!
xoxo, juliette
hi juliette!!
Thank you so much Marisa for a timely encouragement:)
I have been having so many doubts about myself and my creativity, wondering if I should give up doing what I love.
Have a special day,
Wendy
Thank you very much for your message and support!!!!! Big hug! Anastasia
Hi Marisa!
This post is soooo wonderful! It's optimistic, empowering and leaves me completely inspired. We so often let others put labels on us, people who have no idea of the richness in our lives, the choices we make everyday about the direction of our business and the many ups and downs that make up an artist's life. I feel very fortunate to be doing what I'm doing and although at this point my pockets may not be thriving, my life and work certainly is.
thanks :)

When I went to college (as a late blooming student of 34) I actually had a painting professor tell me, after I asked him 'how does one make money at art'...his answer was: "You don't, you teach like me". I almost quit art school because of him, but told myself not to let that get to me. I love the "Thriving Artist" title as compared to the starving one! thanks for the boost!
Wow. I cant believe your teacher actually told you that. I always figured this might be exactly the reason why so many college art teachers were so grumpy and mean. They dont really want to be teachers and have settled for that profession because they dont believe its possible to make a living as artists. Well they are wrong and Im so glad you didnt listen to him. You absolutely CAN make a living as an artist.
dont ever give up Wendy!
YES yes yes! Thank you so much for those words of encouragement and wisdom! Thanks for telling me what I needed to hear today... and probably every day ;) I am a thriving artist but sometimes it's hard to claim it as I feel I'm under so much pressure from society's and family and whoever else's demands!
I will pass the word around to my team of plush makers :) I'll ask if we can refer to your article in our blog (www.Plushteam.com)
xoxo

you are so right focusing on the positive is soo much better for everyone - create on all "thriving artists"
