saying goodbye to our Lulu girl

Lulu in the sun

Such beautiful, sweet and extraordinary animals ~ a dream of mine was to have a great dane. Ten years ago this month I received a call from the Denver Great Dane Rescue, saying that an abandoned black and white dane was just about to come up for adoption in the municipal shelter. The woman on the other end of the phone told me that if I wanted her, to go and get her. And go and get her I did.

The Lu

As you may already know if you follow me on twitter, yesterday we had to say goodbye to our girl.

How do I even begin to express what it meant to share my life with this dog for the last ten years?

Lulu 1

I can’t, because today I’m still too close to the hole that has been left in our heart and our home. What I will say is Lulu was my anchor, unconditionally by my side through so much change and upheaval in my early adult life. Her own challenges due to the trauma of being abandoned in her early life taught me more than I could have ever imagined.  Sharing my life with hers helped me grow in my own grace, and exploration of what it means to truly have compassion and love unconditionally, the effects of which have been most profound while caring for her in her old age and on through to her passing.

My grief is a combination of guilt ~ was I good enough to her? did I love her enough? did I remember to notice and appreciate all the times she quietly sat next to me in my studio while I painted? ~ and then the realization that I gave her the absolute best of myself and my life that I had available over these ten years. Both the men in my life, my ex-husband Art, and Sean who shared their lives with her did the same. She was loved, incredibly, incredibly loved.

Sean + lu + me

Having experienced profound loss before, I will honestly say this journey over the last few months has been much harder than I anticipated. My heart is wide open and my compassion for those who have also made this journey with an animal member of their family is immense. I understand and I’m thinking of you too.

Peep toes

Now you may understand where I’ve been. I haven’t been ready to involve the online world in truly sad moments in my life, although I’m considering what it might be like to share more in this space. When your heart is open ~ this is when you truly see just how much we are all connected to one another in our lives and how we can’t and aren’t meant to do this thing called life alone. Sharing this yesterday through twitter and the outpouring of messages, and how much they soothed me, reminded me how important it is to let people in, to allow them to offer you love and support when you need it.

So thank you. Thank you to all of you who had the chance to know and share so much love with Lulu over the last 10 years and thank you to those of you who glimpsed her spirit through this blog who have extended so much kindness to Sean and I over the last day.

This obviously wasn’t my plan to return to my blog with a heavy heart, and as I’m sure you understand I might need a little time before I return once again. As my tears begin to dry, a sense of relief and quiet calm move in. Our girl was not well for a quite a few months. We did the best we could to make her transition as peaceful and smooth as we could and now she is free and so are we.

Lulu1

To my Lulu girl, you are one of the sweetest, most beautiful and loving spirits I have ever had the chance to know. Thank you for sharing your life with me.

oh my. what a beautiful dog.
oh I am so sorry. I met her once and she was a sweetheart. Wish I could give you a big hug in person. thinking of you and Sean. xo
She was an extraordinary spirit...and I will miss her too.
Sweet sweet photos and memories. :) You're a good mama.
Sending you peace and love.
My eyes just fill with tears thinking of your loss. I will remember to love on my beloved beagle even more today. Sending you a huge hug and know that Lulu lived a tremendous life because you saved and loved her.
I went through much the same thing at the end of November, mine was a rescue dog too who care to us scared ofher own shadow and left this world thinking everyone was a friend who wanted to fuss and cuddle her. The hole left behind is huge and I truly believe a loved family pet is grieved over as much as another family member. They are closer to us in so many ways, but especially as they are constant companions in our day to day lives.
She looks like an absolute beauty and I'm sure you were both lucky to have found each other.
so very sorry for your loss, marissa. what a beautiful pup. (((much love and hugs to you.))
This post had me tearing up at work but also reminded me to give my dog a little extra love when I get home! Thank you for your open and honest writing; I hope it helped ease your pain at least a little bit.
thinking of you, angel xoxox
So sorry to hear this sad news. I'm inspired by how you've expressed in these words how she was a part of your life, something that can be so hard to express sometimes. I can hear how your heart is open, and I'm sending you lots of love and healing thoughts.
Beautiful words you have written about Lulu. Sending you love from Italy...
My heart is heavy for your loss as I have a very special doggie-daughter too. This was a really beautiful entry; thank you for sharing. I can't imagine how hard this is for you right now. I'll be sending my good vibes. It sounds as though you two were lucky to have had each other.
hugs, hugs, hugs to you.. i know what it is like to lose a loved pet and a dear, dear friend. what a beautiful dog - i wish you lots of love and comfort for the next few months.
I'm so sorry, Marisa. I wish I could be there with you during this sad time. Big hugs to you and Sean. xoxo
May the wonderful memories of Lulu live long in your heart and the hearts of her loving family. Much love to you.
So sorry for your loss Marisa. Sending you love and hugs.
May you be comforted by the sweet, unforgettable memories of your girl at this difficult time. 1 of our 2 rescued pooches had a very rough life before she came into ours, and I can relate to the feeling of guilt you mentioned...wondering if you've done enough, shown enough compassion, had enough good times to mend their previously broken hearts. From reading about Lulu here, I am certain she would say, "Yes mama!" and now she's also saying thank you....for everything....
I'm so, so sorry for your loss. How beautifully you've expressed your love for your companion. I'm sure she knew.
i am so with you, aching over losing ittle duncan last week...and have so many of the same questions. the biggest regret i have is that maybe i could have loved him even more, even though we cuddled him all the time and spent every moment we could with him. in the end though i still wished we had more time together. i do know this: we loved him huge, and he loved us huge and all of our lives were bigger, warmer, brighter, lovelier because we had each other. and so it is with you and your lulu...big love to you and sean...xo
I almost could not read this, almost, but did so crying. For you, and selfishly for me, me and my cat at home, 17 yrs. old, a disease that will take her from me our constant companion.

I talked to a friend last week, a woman with rescue dogs + a show dog, and told her this cat was the one pet you get in your life that is "the one", much like a relationship, told her how it hurt. Ahh, she said back, in the dog world we call them heart dogs; you have a heart cat. She said she'd had 2 heart dogs, said it was possible.

Lulu was your heart dog, I'm thinking.

xo
"OH MY!"
What a beautiful girl.
So sorry Marisa.

Hugs
i'm so so sorry for your loss, Marisa. i'm sending big hugs your way.
So sad for you, and so sorry for the loss of your beloved girl.
gentle hugs
found my way here via swirly. lulu was beautiful and as Debi said, she was your heart dog. I have one of those now and he is aging too....and his wizened face makes my heart ache because i know i will not have him with me forever (oh how i wish i could). wishing you peace and fond memories always.
I couldn't read all of your post because it makes me cry and makes me so sad. I'm really sorry for your loss, Marisa & Sean, and I hope you will keep finding peace and happy memories to sustain you. There's nothing to compare with spending your life with a beloved pet--nothing in the world.
The tears are already welling up as I read this beautiful tribute to your sweet Lulu. I lost one of my dogs last fall and know exactly how you must be feeling. I hope you take comfort in knowing that you gave her the best years of her life.
So sorry for your loss. You've written about it so beautifully here. It's clear you loved Lulu and that you did everything you could for her. Most importantly you were there for her when she needed you most. She knew she was loved.
I lost my own 12-year old terrier Leo after a year long battle with cancer a month ago today. I understand second-guessing yourself, I've done a lot of that in the last month. But, I also know I did love him and did everything I could for him. And, I so appreciated everything he did for me. I know he's ok now and he's not suffering, and I take comfort in that and the time I did have with him.

Take care. And just be gentle with yourself over the coming days and weeks.
i am so sorry to read about the loss of your dear friend.
sending peace and light...
Oh Marisa, I had no idea. And now I know why you haven't replied to my totally clueless email. I'm crying and crying over here. She was such a big sweetie and I'm so glad I got to meet her and pat her gentle head. I'm so sorry she is gone and that you feel guilt now along with sadness. You did give her enough love. You did appreciate her. You rescued her and gave her an incredible life. Hugs to you.
What a beautiful tribute. You are wonderful for documenting LuLu's earth life this way and I am sure she still feels your love and in turn encircles you in hers. I love the photo of the both of your feet, so fitting for 2 souls on a journey together... that's just what this is, time for Lulu to go forth a different leg of the journey as you travels onwards to a different one as well. HUgs
I know how you feel. When we had to put my childhood cat to sleep. We were heartbroken. I hope all the memories you have with Lulu will comfort you through this sad time.
If you wondered whether you loved her enough, then you did. :)
Oh no! Sending big hugs to you & Sean. Take all the time you need, hun - I'm sure your readers understand how hard it is to lose a member of your family.

Lulu looks like such a beautiful girl. Those big soulful eyes! They give us so much & ask for so little in return, don't they?

*hugs*
Kris
the love we share with our animals can be one of the greatest which is why the loss is also one of the hardest. your post bought tears to my eyes, as i thought of you and what it would feel like for me to lose one of my precious little boys.
big hugs, and thank you for sharing these moments of your tender heart.
Marisa, I'm so so sorry for your loss. Having an old girl at home, I know that one day I will experience the very sad moments you and Sean are living right now. My girl is 12 years old, and she had surgery 3 times in the last 2 years. We care a lot for her, she's our baby.

Big big hugs
two great danes have been such great spirits in my life...so sorry...everywhere i look lately people are losing beloved pets...heal well...
This one has me in tears. I have 3 dogs myself so I can imagine the pain you feel Marissa. I'm so sorry for your loss. Lulu was beautiful.

Adele
I too know the joys and sorrows of loving a canine. The joys always out shine the sorrows. You gave her great love and a great life. Dogs ask for nothing more. Hugs to you and Sean.
To love AND be loved by a dog is truly a great gift, so happy you had 10 years to love and be loved soooo much. My heart breaks for you, and you are in my prayers.
oh, sweetie. I'm so sorry. I can't imagine the loss. I'm thinking of you.

loves,
Britt
We went through it too. Our black lab Jake, who was more human than dog with deep soulful eyes fell ill... he was my husband's best friend. They worked together everyday. My heart goes out to you.
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Lulu. It is a sad and painful thing to have to let go of such an important part of out families. I am sure Lulu knew how much she was loved and how much her life improved in your care. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Sean.

Aw. Loss of any kind, at any point, and for any reason is heartbreaking. Find comfort in those around you and those who simply feel like they know you through here.
Oh Marisa, my heart is breaking for you. I'm so sorry to hear about Lulu. Losing someone you love is never easy. She sounds like she was a wonderful friend. I know how much you'll miss her, but she'll always be with you in your heart. Love and hugs to you and Sean. XO
I'm here if you need me, pal. For that matter, so is Lulu. They never really leave us.
Oh, Marisa. I'm so so sorry. I'm holding you and Sean in my heart.
Marisa, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Lulu!
It's such hard thing to go through. I know her heart was so full of love for you and yours for her. Hold dear those beautiful memories, for they will surface often.
Sending Angel Wings to wrap you in love and comfort.
There is nothing I could possibly say to possibly ease the empty space in your heart - yet my heart recognizes that space and wants to call out with a smile and tender acknowledgment. I too have recently lost a long time member of my family who did not speak with words. This was the first Christmas without her since before I was a teenager. She had a long long happy life which I'm glad for, but it still doesn't help the absence.

My heart goes out to both you & Sean for the empty space in your family, home & hearts.
It's the worst thing, having to say goodbye to a beloved pet. My heart goes out to you. I'm imagining your dear pup and my Brulée bun over the rainbow bridge, frolicking in a sunny field of clover : )
Oh, lovely. This wound is still so fresh for me I can hardly make out the screen here. I'm sending you so much deep love and sympathy. I miss my girl so much. Knowing this makes me so sad for you! My heart is wrapped around yours, babe. And the spirits of the blessings of our sweet street girls. Lulu is so beautiful.
I'm so sorry for you and Sean.

Hugs, pixie
It's just the hardest thing ever. My heart breaks for you. Your pictures are beautiful, and I'm pretty sure you loved her enough. xo
I can connect with you on the love you have with your dog, I am the proud doggy mama of two beautiful Danes Lexi and Samson. I worry so bad about my girl she is 9.5 yrs and that as you know is quite old for a dane Sammy is only 3. I am so sorry. Danes r truly the gentle giants:)
Oh, my heart goes out to you. I have and have had many dogs dear to my heart---they become so much a part of our lives. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos and thoughts. I have loved seeing Lulu pop up on your blog from time to time---such a beautiful big sweetie.
what a beautiful dog, how lucky she was to be loved by you. even though she is gone, she'll still be there to watch over you. My dog has been gone for almost eight years and I swear I can still feel her around and it makes me smile.
I'm so sorry. My heart is breaking for you. We lost our pup just a couple of months ago, and my cat of 10 years last Christmas... it was one of the hardest things I've ever been through. I'm so sorry. BIG BIG HUGS
I don't like dogs but that Lulu of yours seems to be so sweet, she's got such a friendly and grateful face that I couldn't hold back some stubborn tears, it's like losing a person, so sad.

Gotta be brave, she lived a good life with you, always remind that, it's true and comforting.
I like to believe that one day we will all be reunited with our beloved ones.
Oh.... I have tears in my eyes. This is a beautiful post. Too much to say to say it here, but I am with you -- you, too, have an amazing spirit, my friend. Goodbye sweet Lulu. Hugs & love to you, Marisa.
I'm so sorry. My love is with you.
what a beautiful, thoughtful and heartbreaking post. sounds like your Lulu girl was a great gift and most loved, and that she gave back only love in return. I have experienced great loss before, and still I know that if I were to lose my little Hazel, my world would be crushed. animals really do bring so much joy to our lives. remembering that joy that Lulu brought to you and your family will make the grief a little easier. I know we don't know each other, but sending you hugs all the same.
Oh my God! I am terribly, horribly sorry. How unbelievably awful. My 14-year-old dog lies next to me as I type this. I have tears in my eyes as I realize I will have to go through the same thing at some point. For the childless I am sure it is like losing a child. I know it will be for me. I am so, so, so sorry. I know you gave Lulu a wonderful life and that she is smiling down at you from above.
I am so sorry.
Oh, Marisa...I am so sorry for your loss. Lulu sounds like such a dear and loving dog. I so enjoy the pictures of her that you have shared with us. I send you my thoughts and prayers and a big hug.
Oh, Marisa, I am so sorry about your Lulu. I've been in your shoes and oh, it hurts. Hugs and kind thoughts being sent your way.
Oooooohhh... even the floppy ears are handsome on a big Great Dane!
I discovered your blog through CMM's... and I have a ten year old dog, too. He is a Great Pyrenees mix I got at the Boulder Humane Society, now we live in Switzerland together. He had cancer almost two years ago, so I've had to think about what life would be like without him... it is not the same, though, to contemplate it or have it be so.
Thoughts going out to you and yours from Switzerland, too...
What a beautiful post to remember your girl. I too have holes in my heart from animals who are no longer with me. Oh I miss them so, even after years, they will always be with me. Thanks for sharing about it here.
ee cummings said "i carry your heart with me...i carry it in my heart." sending peace to you & sean. Linda

I'm am so saddened to hear of your loss Marisa.
I loved reading and seeing pictures of dear Lulu on your blog, I will miss her.
Sending you big hugs.

xxx Em
I am so sorry for your loss. I find your blog, and this posting on your blog, after Googling "Lulu Great Dane" in a moment of time-wasting as I sit on the couch next to another Great Dane named Lulu. Also a rescue, and with markings very similar to your dear departed girl.

But your pictures and heart-ache make me cry because they remind me so strongly of another wonderful black and white Dane, Bucephalus, who shared our home and life for seven all too short years. They break our hearts, but it is only because we love them so much and they are so special to us.

I read somewhere of a Native American tradition in which the passage from this world to the next (the River Styx or Pearly Gates, if you will) is guarded by great wolf like creatures. The spirits of our departed canine companions wait for us on this side of that point of transition and, if we treated them well, loved them, and made their time in this life happy, they will vouch for us to the gatekeepers, attesting to our worthiness to pass. Maybe your Lulu is there now with Bucephalus and the others, telling them how you saved her and cared for her and made her life wonderful. I am sure of it.
I'm so sorry, Marisa... I'm sure you were the best mom Lulu could have had. xoxo
thank you for sharing this story with me. Im sure Lulu andBucephalus are there :)
Nearly a year to the date and I remember our loss like it was just yesterday. It is a breathtaking loss that seems difficult to believe is a reality, but at the same time my heart has been comforted by the addition of Stuart (our 10 month "Chessie"). There are days that the children or I will comment how 'ole Bentley sure would have enjoyed the company of our young puppy. Or how he would have liked to join us on a particular walk. I am grateful for everyday we had him in our home and I am grateful that we are so fortunate to have this young puppy with us now. Our lives are all the better for our loving pets. I remember the heartbreak of loosing our dear Bentley, and as you too know time will lessen the pain and sweeten the memories. Wishing you the best in this difficult time.
