Thoughts on Squam Art Workshops

Jen at squam

I’m going to tell you a little story.

About a year and half before Creative Thursday became what you now know it as, before it was earning any income ~ I decided that I would take a trip with Sean to Italy. To be blunt, I wasn’t making any money, still had no foreseeable way of making money, had a little bit left in savings and decided that I wasn’t going to wait any longer for more "perfect" financial circumstances to appear before taking a trip to Italy which was a dream of mine.

So we went. The trip was an adventure to say the least~ and it was great! On the plane ride home, I was in tears not knowing how I was going to continue with my work when I returned. During our layover in Atlanta, GA ~ Sean and I had a beer in one of those airport "sports bars". A very nice man next to us struck up a conversation about baseball with Sean. We soon learned that this man lived in Los Angeles too. He was in the design business with a specialty in fabric and furniture manufacturing (at the time I was creating my chairs). I was at such a loss as to what my next step was that I just asked this man who I had known for literally 5 minutes if I could contact him and talk with him for some advice. He said "sure!"

As it turns out this man became my mentor, helped me launch my first children’s line of furniture and bedding ~ and his confidence in me and my design point of view forever changed the course of my business and my life.

One trip to Italy. It took going to Italy to meet a man that lived in Los Angeles :)

My point is this: And I feel like I can speak frankly with you ~ because we can talk, you and I, about the "real" things.

If you are on the fence about whether to take a trip that inspires and excites, to this amazing art retreat for instance. Don’t let fear especially financial fears stop you. When you come across an opportunity that gives that you a jolt of "I’ve gotta do this!" ~ pay attention and be open to what it’s about ~ my experience has shown that those kinds of opportunities are a sure sign that you are on your path, and you never know how that will unfold ~ but it’s always good!

I know, I know that this might be an especially "scary" time for your to think of doing something purely for the joy and inspiration that it would bring to your life ~ to do something JUST for you. And it would feel strange even inviting you and suggesting that you come to an art retreat this year in particular ~ but it doesn’t because I know already ~ life experience has taught me that more than ever these are the EXACT times that you should be doing something that inspires you ~ that supports you in your dreams.

Also, and I’ve heard this from some of the emails I’ve been getting from those of you wanting to attend SAW. I know it can feel intimidating to be around people who may have more "experience" than you, who may already be professional artists, who may seemingly be further along on the journey than you. But again, not a reason to stop you from coming to this retreat  ~and here’s why. If you are serious about stepping into your creativity and owning it full on, you have to become comfortable around your peers ~ you have to recognize that there is no difference, meaning they are not "above" you and you are not "below" them, between you and someone who has more experience than you.

We are all here to learn from each other and be in support of one another ~ and again NOW more than ever is the time to recognize this and let our actions reflect this way of being.

I’m sure there will be teachers and students who know way more than me ~ and I look forward to what we will all learn from each other. As a teacher I recognize that my students are there to teach me as well learn from me. I see a retreat like this as a gathering, an exchange between individuals who’ve chosen, for those 3 days that we will spend together, to put themselves and their creativity first.

With all of that said, I hope you will join me this June. It would be an honor to be part of the encouragement, support and inspiration for you on your creative adventures.

(if none of the above applies to you and you can fearlessly move through this world with an open heart, rock on!!!)

And FYI ~ here’s a link to a lovely interview that Holly shared with Elizabeth the founder of Squam Art Workshops.

See you there!!!!!

Can I just tell you that this is exactly what I needed to hear today? I can completely visualize your experience of going to Italy and then meeting your soon-to-be mentor on the trip back. I need one of those!

And I can feel that "I've gotta do this!" feeling, which I really need to pay attention to more closely. There are several workshops that are calling me at the June Squam retreat. Now I need to convince my husband!
I so believe you... however, rather than being scary (seriously, it's just what I want) it just isn't feasible for Spring. I am going to aim for Fall. That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to hold tight to the building I'm doing right now and make it possible to take advantage of all the brilliance later this year.

How's it sound? Good plan?
Thank you for this post.
hi marisa!
what a fabulous post!
your class looks wonderful!
thank you for sharing your inspiring story!

Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Great story! I have met some great people in airport bars, but don't have a story that good :-) And you are absolutely right about just going ahead and doing it. I started in licensing right after 9/11 ~ quit my full-time job and went back to freelancing while people were losing jobs left and right all over the country. I don't recall what I was thinking at that time (other than I really, really hated my job), but I managed to make it through the tough times and hopefully will make it through these as well. I have already signed up for Squam, but in the fall. I am a little nervous, mostly because I am a circle-around-it, think about kind of artist rather than a jump-in-and-do-it-now artist. And even though I do a lot by hand, it all ends up in the computer for the brunt of the work. So I am actually looking forward to this freedom ~ and fear ~ of no undo button and just having to DO IT.
Marisa....I was one of those people last year who was so scared to go to SAW. I was kind of 'forced' to go last year by Swirly. I was so intimidated to meet all of these amazing artists when I hadn't painted anything since elementary school. But it was the BEST decision I ever made. I may never be a 'great' artiste but I met some amazing people, round that I was more creative then I thought and it really gave me confidence in all areas of my life. If people are still on the fence...do it! It will be the best thing you ever do for yourself. I just wish I could attend June AND September...because I would love to see you! xoxo Melissa
Marisa, thank you for sharing your story! It inspires me even more to continue to take this creative path and share a little goodness in the creative world. Thank you for this assurance that it is perfectly alright to be doing something purely for the joy and inspiration that it would bring to my life. It seems that a lot of others (some family and friends members) don’t quite understand that statement… and honestly sometimes they make me feel like im a little “crazy”. I truly believe in you, all the others wonderful artists, “going to be” artists and me! I’m loving the love and support that are send my way, and I’m always learning something new each day from you and other wonderful artists and creators I’ve meet in this world wide web!

I wish I stay close enough to attend your workshop at Squam. Perhaps one day I will get this chance and perhaps one day anyone and everyone could attend one of your workshops no matter where we are! I’m hopeful..and I believe in you, all the other artist out there living their dreams and me!

I love you, sean, your little co-workers and all your wonderful creative friends here on bubble space! Have a lovely merry happy day!
Marisa--thank you for your sweet words of encouragement to SAW gals like me. I've been itching to "step into my creativity" for a long time. From the moment I found out about SAW I felt drawn in. It called out loudly to me, and I've taken the plunge and have signed up for both June and September. I cannot wait to be amongst such a talented crowd. I'm a learner...and I bet that I come home brimming and beaming! See you there!
As usual, you have spoken something that I needed to hear. I am going to continue doing something that I am excited about 'just for me.' Yes. I am. xox
this is simply perfect. squam changed my life for good and i can't stop encouraging people to do the same for themselves.
Thank you for your message. It's exactly what I needed to hear today. I would love to attend a workshop, but money stands in my way. I know I have to make the investment to myself and my art. You really inspired me to take more steps towards my goal.

Blessings-
Pippin
Marisa, thank you for this post - it's a great reminder of why I already signed up for June! (I'll be in your Create-A-Painting-A-Day class!) My sweet friend Pixie turned me on to Squam and ever since I signed up, it's like this beautiful beacon of hope getting me through some tough months. It doesn't really feel decadent to have signed up - well, it does, but it also feels really essential. An essential bit of self-care. I'm soooo looking forward to June!
you inspire me
Thank you, once again, Marisa, for nudging me along despite my self doubts. I really hope to be in your class at Squam... I'll be the one asking if I'm holding the paintbrush correctly :)
wonderful, inspiring post in so many ways -- thank you! I had already sent my registration and will be joining your class Thursday at Squam (yay!), but if I hadn't, I think this would have convinced me!
I have read this post a few times, what an inspiring story! I don't know much about these workshops, now I want to find out more!
