this is my morning

Coffee with sean

Coffee with Sean. All this week we’ve been meeting here in the morning for lengthy discussions from everything to the economy to finding peace while shopping in Trader Joes to enjoying the feeling of fall in the morning air. I realize when Sean and I do take the time to linger over coffee, we’ve slowed down to a healthy pace in our lives. In fact today is the first day in quite a while where my schedule feels wide open in front of me and I am breathing a nice sigh of relief. I’m experimenting with not making any scheduled plans for the next few weeks, instead leaving socializing open to spontaneity and how I’m feeling on any given day. The fact that I feel a sense of relief is a sign that this is exactly the kind of space I need right now. Hey, the beauty of the life I’ve built for myself is having this kind of freedom in my schedule and I’m not going miss it any more either...!

In light of the present state of "things" in this country, I feel inspired to share some of our coffee time discussion here. Before coffee, I popped in on some blogs this morning and realized that there’s a reason I haven’t been visiting many blogs lately. And if my own blog seems a little me-centric, there’s a reason for that too. Along with leaving some space around me, being in my own bubble these days has been important for my sense of peace. And as you can see from the photo above, my own bubble is a pretty nice place to be.

I’m realizing that the more internet focused I become, the stronger I need to be in my sense of self, for a number of reasons, one of which is this ~ the more connected we are, the less genuinely "connected" we are, because we are overloaded with knowing too much about everyone and everything. It used to be that all we knew about was what was happening in our very own neighborhoods. In my opinion there’s TOO much information out there between television, radio, and now the internet, and that’s probably only going to increase. And if you’re not feeling strong in your sense of self it is just way too easy to be buffeted about by what’s happening outside of your own bubble. And while it can be good to be informed, and aware of what’s happening in the world, if it’s not in your control ~ or effecting you directly, it can be very upsetting to know too much. I was reminded of this yesterday, when I made the mistake of tuning into Suze Orman on Oprah. Good Lord, while this woman may be financially savvy, she really needs to be checked on how she talks to people. Not only did I leave that show feeling fearful of my financial well being, but concerned about how human beings, especially those with a false sense of power, treat each other. And then I came back to my own bubble, making dinner, planting some flowers and I felt better again. :)

I guess what I’m really trying to say here is this ~ it’s a good time to be more focused on your own every day life. Along with that, I want to say again how much I appreciate those of you who are willing to step out of your own bubble to come and visit me here ~ and if you ever need to take a blogging break from this blog, or go away all together because you think I’m rambling too much, I certainly understand. And now you know why, if I’m not visiting you as often as I used to, it’s because being here in my own bubble is what’s feeling best right now. In fact staying close to home, both virtually and physically, is what’s refueling my own creative juices as well as inspiring me to share more here at my blog. I promise to continue to make it a nice bubble to visit in this wide, wide world of the internet, especially during these times, because not only do we need to surround ourselves with more uplifiting ideas ~ But also if any of us are going to take the time to visit other blogs, or take in any more information, I think it should be worthwhile.

I am doing the same thing. I have pulled back a lot. I keep apologizing on my blog for not posting as much, and feel bad about it, but honestly just need a break from all things. I am focusing on myself and trying to figure out how to proceed with my life. I have been a bit of a workaholic and feel like I have lost sight of the big picture. Quiet time is the answer! So, go, be quiet, breath in your space, your life, and enjoy what is most important...
I am actually ignoring my own blog and visiting others..especially yours. I have been very busy with my business and staying in close touch with it and home. But I love and enjoy your thoughts and love that your staying home. Keep sharing....
Jaja, living in Argentina it is somethig I learnt years ago, and no radio no tv for me.

Came back stronger an brighter!!!
I appreciate you writing this - because sometimes people just don't understand that this is exactly what you need, and having your head filled with too many worries and distractions is certainly not productive for your artwork!

I've had a bit of a wake up call because I've been trying to fit too much in to every day and have gone and made myself ill because of it!

My bubble has to exclude artwork for a while(which really gets at me!!), but once I've done my 8 hours of my 'day job' work, I need to learn to rest for a while, rather than trying to fit another 5 or 6 hours of artwork on top! Silly me. But I've learnt my lesson :) And just taking part in everyday life? I need to learn to do that again too!

I guess I went the other way and got too engrossed in my work/art bubble and forgot about the life part!

But, one day, I'll ditch the work part, and it will all be so much easier to fit in!!
Time is something that we cannot create more of. This piece is right in line with some things I have been thinking of lately.
Well Marisa, I think your blog, for me anyways, is a good place to visit on a daily basis because I find your thinking and creative trials very similar to my own...so when I am feeling disconnected from everything, which has been my problem lately, tuning into blogs like yours helps for sure. Just knowing that there's another artist out there feeling like turning inwards for abit instead of outwards, is good to know. Because I am doing exactly what your doing...protecting my very sensitive nature, giving myself abit more nurturing and indeed enjoying my own little world, even though some people may be jealous of it. Keep doing what's best for you, in doing so is where you'll find your best work and best being. Be Well...Mandy Saile of Bijou's Whimsy.
Now I don't feel as guilty that I live in a beautiful bubble of my own. My sisters give me so much crap about it. Jealousy I guess. I used to work so much that I wasn't living. Now I live for myself, my husband, our pets, and of course my art! Thanks for the positive blogging, I love visiting yours weekly. Karin

As I have transitioned to being a full-time artist I feel I have "retreated" from my old ways. It's funny how my perspective on shopping, eating out, going and going have changed in 6 weeks time. Stepping back and looking into the bubble I created is where I feel I am at this time, and the desire to change is itching in my bones. I am quickly finding that this time I am so blessed to have at home alone and then afterschool with my children is real quality time. I can't tell you how many meals we've eaten as a "car picnic" over the past 3 years! Last night we had a real picnic outside. Now those are the memories I want my children to have of our life when they are older. Thanks for always sharing so honestly.
Amen, sista!
Very well said.. Thank you!
My heart and head said a definite 'yes' to this post - it's healthy for us to live in our cosy bubble at times, to check in with ourselves and stay close to home. It's so easy to feel overwhelmed, in the real and blog worlds, i agree! i've just moved to a new city, so my bubble has been turned upside down, but slowly slowly i'm making a new home here :-) Great post, M x

Oh my gosh - I so resonate with this - thank you for sharing! I've been having to go on more and more blog/reader breaks because otherwise I get overwhelmed... and I think I reach of tipping point after catching up on my favorites from being inspired to then if I continue I actually get Uninspired. Then I take a walk in the market, smell the fresh flowers and re-anchor to MY life.
Excellent post Marisa! I really enjoyed reading this. Since I came to Germany in August I've been HANDED peace on a platter because I'm not exposed to anything going on in the states right now -- and I think that is good because when I do read the news online or read some blogs I follow I can see that it's a good time for me to be over here... Seems like there is a lot of political and financial trouble and to be over here away from it all is my 'bubble' I guess you can say. I feel completely at ease and the happiest I've felt all year. I think that's just it, I'm happier because I don't absorb as much here. Life is different. I'm away from all the pop culture, politics, television... I get BBC World and CNN on television (in English) and it's so much different than American news channels, the focus is on the WORLD not just what Britney Spears did or whether Clay Aiken is gay or not or the election, gas prices, and how half the country wants to move to Canada if McCain is elected.

All I can say is stay in your bubble and protect yourself as much as you need to. It's healthy to step out of the circus ring sometimes and tune 'out' for a moment.
