Exciting News! My first children’s book!!

Ok then, I was waiting to post about this later today but it’s 3 something in the AM PST and it seems I can’t sleep because of all the excitement. And from the emails I’ve been getting, it seems many of you aren’t sleeping either. It also seems like the birds aren’t sleeping either (when did bird’s start singing at 1:30 am?) Come to think of it, how did I think I could sleep through the release of my first children’s book? It’s not everyday you release your first children’s book. But it is today, on a very special Creative Thursday: This is the official announcement that the first Creative Thursday children’s book is now available for pre-order right here!

Yippy!!!!!!

As I wrote in my email that I sent out a few hours ago, after countless questions asking me if I ever "thought of creating a children’s book?" ~ I finally did. :) It seems like the obvious next step, doesn’t it? Considering my present style that includes all these characters just asking for their stories to be told. If you’ve been wanting to know the stories of the characters as much as I do, then here we go!

For those of you following the blog, and the daily paintings, all of these "Olive" paintings might be starting to make some sense?! If you’ve been wondering why I’ve been particularly attached to my little "Olive" character lately, now you know why. Basically you’ve been getting sneak previews to some of the book illustrations over the last few months. Since there’s only one of me here, a girl’s got to multi-task.

"Who are you going to be today Olive?" is a story about a little bird named Olive who is just learning how to be herself. As I also mentioned in my email this is pretty much my autobiography thus far.

While I was approached by a publisher last year, in keeping with the indie design spirit I’ve decided to self-publish this edition and I’m releasing the first 100 hardcover for pre-order, numbered and signed at my website. They will be ready to ship in August 2008. Needless to say this particular project is very near and dear to my heart.
You should also know that while this is a "children’s book" ~ it was important for me to write one that I would want to own, one that I would enjoy as much as the kiddos. So with all of that said, I really, truly hope you enjoy this new addition to the growing collection.

thank you, thank you, thank you already for your thoughtful emails, blog posts spreading the news!! and book orders!

wishing you a very happy creative thursday! ...I’m going to try to get some sleep now.

Marisa,
This is very exciting, indeed. I can understand that you could loose sleep over this. I got my email last night and put my order in asap. I am so looking forward to this book, as I have been a children's book collector for quite some time and of course, a BIG FAN of your work for a while now.
Congratulations and have fun creating.

Hugs,

Ooh my! What exciting and fabulous news-- I wouldn't be able to sleep either. =) Best wishes, I just know it will be a success! And both my sister-in-laws are preggers, so I know of 2 orders for you. =)
How wonderful!!! I'm sure it will be a delightful book. And I bet it will become a favorite in many households. I wonder who will like it them more, The kids or The Moms. May have to order two. :)
Ah, that's exciting. I just ordered one for my inner kid. (No, I'm not pregnant.

One thing though, I forgot that my PayPal still says Mighty Ducklings. If you can change the recipient name to Kelvin Kao, that would be nice. Of course you don't have to. I'll just have a very confused roommate, ha.
How absolutely fantastic. I know it will be a gorgeous book. You are so talented.
That Olive is a cutie! Wishing you tons of success!

Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us children's illustrators. Congratulations for taking the amazing leap into childrens books. Something I've been wanting to do for a very long time. Maybe when I have more time to devote to my craft than just a few hours per week. Of course you know all about that as you've been there 'Creative Thursday'. Is it 'Creative Everyday' for you now? If so, what a dream come true! :-)
Congratulations on such a huge accomplishment! I'm sure it will be an adorable book.
That's so cool. And I love Olive. I'll be sure to look for this book, because I'll need a copy for myself, and one for each of my 6 siblings, and for my mother and my step-mother, and my two best friends and their sons.... the list goes on and on and on and on...
Congratulations!! What an exciting time in your work.

Whenever I look at your art, it makes me smile, melt, giggle, tear up, and it fills my heart. You capture so much emotion with your whimsical, loveable, adorable, huggable lil characters.

My book is ordered, and I'm patiently waiting for it to arrive for my birthday in August.

Sweet Olive is going to go wherEVER she wants to today. Wherever.
I can't wait to read it! :) YAY!
Hi Marisa,

Congrads on your book! I have been contemplating self-publishing one of my own as well and was curious as to which company you used to make your book. I see so many different sites its hard to choose which one.

I have been in the licensing business for about 10 years now so I know full hand what it takes to create a product and its not small feat, so cudos to you!!
