about inspiration

Last year on the podcast about color with Rachel and Holly, Rachel mentioned that she’d like to know more about what inspires each of my paintings. I said I would consider writing more about what’s behind each piece, but I’m afriad I’ve fallen short of that that and here’s why. One of the qualities that I enjoy most about art is its ability to embody a different meaning, mood, feeling for every individual. While my art is often straightforward and simple, each creation contains a specific feeling. And since my paintings are daily paintings, you, the viewer are getting a glimpse into my day, often translated through the expressions in my characters, or in the case of this photo above, you are seeing a replica of imagery that inspired me directly. Remember "songbird" from last week? My next door neighbors' trees set against the bright blue sky were where the choice of colors came from.

When it feels significant or appropriate I will share a piece of the story behind the image, otherwise I like for my art to speak for itself. And in all honesty, sometimes I don’t really even want to give too much thought to what’s behind my work. I prefer that you elicit whatever meaning resonates with you all on your own.

Keeping my word is important. And if I can’t or decide not to keep it, I’ll explain why. With all my new space and time, I can finally share with you those things I’ve been meaning to tell you for quite some time now.

Since I am such a fan of your work, I have often wondered too where you find your inspiration and ideas. I like what you have written today about leaving it up to us and our feelings when we see your paintings. I think art in many forms becomes very personal to each individual, I know it does for me.
I have very strong emotions about each piece that I collect, whether it be a painting, a quilt, a teddy bear, doll, etc.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts today and a little piece of inspiration.
Hugs,
Karen
I have so much respect for your sense of integrity about what you do. :) It's refreshing!
I was just writing a comment on a friend's blog about your podcasts, i think you would enjoy her post as well.

Thank you for everything that you share!
I bet that you've received a mailbox full of exclamation points with "I agree; Thank you; You inspire me;" and here's one more, I hope you don't mind!
I've just recently stumbled upon your blog as a result of getting into my new read-a-blog hobby. I love the inspiration I find there, not just visual interestingly enough, but a confirmation of sorts for the path I'm on. Mine is not crystal clear yet however it is interesting to say the least.
Thank you for bits of your day, your art, your WONDERFUL and INSIGHTFUL podcasts!

I love how honest about your work, life, process you are and your approach really resonates with me.

Thank you for sharing your world with us it's truly inspiring in many ways!

i totally get where you are coming from, Marisa.
I went to an art exhibit the other day, and the artist had this whole long description of what her paintings meant. frankly, i had a completely different take on her work, and really preferred to stick with my own, more positive interpretation from the one she had provided (which was really dark!)
So, i totally support your desire to let your viewers draw their own conclusion. sometimes, that's the best way to go!
