time for change

my studio 2008 with my co-workers Lulu and Riley

...all the way around. Along with all the reflecting I’ve been doing this past week, there’s also been a lot of re-organizing both personally and professionally. The last 2 Sundays have been spent in honor of shoring up the "framework" (including the building of a brand new IKEA desk) to support all the exciting creative projects that I can’t wait to jump into this year.

In fact this entire month of January has been officially dedicated to organizing everything from top to bottom. And this includes some re-structuring of Creative Thursday and its pricing. I have to be honest and say that I’ve been agonizing about this one for the last couple of months, but it’s time. This weekend, I raised my prices over at Etsy. The reason I agonized over this is because putting a value on what I create has never been my favorite part of selling art, and I’m sharing it here on the blog because there isn’t an artist I know who doesn’t struggle with the same thing from time to time. And I was also recently asked advice on this very subject. So, I’m opening up the discussion. We all want our work to available to everyone who loves it ~ we all know what it’s like to love something we think we can’t afford and we all want to be able to afford and live the lifestyle we treasure, and for all these reasons it’s always difficult to decide how to price our art. Not to mention the world of creativity is completely subjective. The range in what paintings alone cost is so very wide. But I’m not here to change the pricing of art, a personal choice that is up to each one of us to decide individually what feels right. And since I live in this often times very expensive city of Los Angeles; that is a huge contributing factor. L.A. continues to ask more of me and to stay on the path of my unfolding dreams, I must continue to ask more of myself.

Most importantly, I want to thank all of you who have supported my art, especially those of you who have purchased one if not several of my creations! I couldn’t have made it this year without Etsy and without you. In appreciation, I will be sending an email to my Etsy buyers to honor the old pricing through January 24th. Also I will be having my first sale (buy 2 prints and get a 3rd free) for 1 day only at the end of this month. And for those of you who read the blog, I will honor my old pricing through next Monday (by refunding you the difference) if you enter "blog" in the message area of your order. Thanks for understanding.

Yay--so nice to see your space. Was going to ask where you got that slammin' desk!
I love that you can talk about this. I have been agonizing over pricing as well. I want to be comparable to others on ETSY, but at the same time, be able to make a business out of it. Good for you! And....I love your work space!!
that desk is perfect. just what I've been looking for! and it's currently at Ikea?
Hi Alyson ~ This desk is called the TOVIK and it was on sale at the beginning of January. It is being discontinued so you just have to check your local IKEA's and see if there are any left. I checked online but couldn't find it. It too bad they are discontinuing it, as it really is a great desk. A little tricky to put together...sometimes this is why they discontinue certain pieces. Good luck with the search!
