Bella and Sophie

9 x 12 in.

How about these two little princesses? If you own a King Charles Spaniel or you happen to know one, maybe you’ll agree that these are some of the sweetest little dogs ever. They just have the softest temperaments. This was a surprise gift for someone (a special commission) and I heard that they were thrilled to get it!

And to the answer the question in the comments about the more "realistic" look of the commissions ~ Yes, I do tend to do some of the pet paintings in a more realistic style because I am trying to capture an individual animal. I find that the personality is all in the eyes, so getting the eyes "right" is very important to me. With that said, I’m not really a fan of traditional portrait work, so I try to keep my style in each piece, (which is of course why people come to me anyway).

When I started painting 20 years ago now, I would paint everything from a photograph, or a still life in a super realistic style. I’ve since decided that this is how you learn. Once you know how to represent an image "exactly" you can continue to hone the craft of painting realistically, or you can branch off into your own very unique style. I find that many times people confuse artistic talent, especially in painting or drawing, with the level of realism an artist achieves (also a special talent, but not the only kind). Often the people that paint or draw in a naive style with very simple lines, have chosen to depart from the "still life" style. (I like to think that I am one of these artists. The style I am presently working in is my choice of painting, creating art that resonates with me.) I have always been attracted to other art with a "simpler" style (although the amazing Andrew Wyeth was one of my early favorites), often amazed at what lies behind that simpler style of the artists I admire. I’ll have to show you some very early work sometime, so you can see how it started for me.

Thanks for the well wishes and the updates from those of you who attended the show. I heard it was a great turnout and a lot of fun! And paintings were sold, and that’s always FANTASTIC!!

This is so precious. I love your this painting of Bella and Sophie..and yes, the eyes are so important. You've really captured that magic here. Bev
I'd love to see your early work- perhaps a regular segment "my journey". haha.

I am really interested to hear you say that you painted detailed pictures to come back to the simplified. That really makes sense to me. I know through studying other subjects that you have to have a really good understanding of 'the whole' to be able to recognise 'the essence', but I'd never thought about that with art.

Can I share a story that an artist friend of mine told me about his primary school art days? The students were instructed to paint a sunflower, so Michael slapped on the paint while the girl next to him painstakingly created a "photo" version of the flower. He was covered in yellow, and his page was full of thick paint, dripping onto the desk and floor. He started to panic about the mess he was making when he saw his teacher, Sister Mary, approaching their desks. She looked at their work and then said to the girl, "Julie, that is exactly what a sunflower looks like." Then she turned and said, "and Michael, that is exactly what a sunflower feels like."

How cute is that?

Thanks for giving me something to think about during the humdrum of work.
You have to send this to Oprah!! :) Doesn't she have this breed???
Anyway, I love them. SO CUTE. And I love the portrait of the girl you did today. If you sell it let me know, I will buy it from you.
This picture is adorable. I love dogs. I grew up with Brittney Spaniels.
Your right about the eyes. It's always the first thing I look at when I buy a Teddy Bear for my collection.
I have this breed of dog and you are right on about their personality. You have captured them perfectly. I just started reading your blog about 2 weeks ago and LOVE LOVE LOVE your artwork. You are enormously talented. I am going to purchase one of your paintings but can't decided which one. You have so many I like. Keep it up. You are still reaching new people.
